Overview of Omics

Genomics: Refers to the science of genome mapping (including genetic maps, physical maps, transcript maps), nucleotide sequence analysis, gene positioning and gene function analysis of all genes.

Transcriptome: Comprehensively analyzing the RNA (such as mRNA) expressed by all genes of an organism or cell.

Proteome: Analyzing proteins expressed by a certain organism or cell under various environmental conditions, including post-translational modification, under varying conditions.

Metabolome: Investigating small molecule metabolites (<1000 Da) to understand biological responses to external stimuli.

C.elegans and omics research

C. elegans was the first multicellular organism to have its genome sequenced. It has rich bioinformatics and genetic resources that have greatly facilitated the research and application of this model organism. In addition to its relatively low complexity, many well-maintained C. elegans omics databases (Table 1) also support its application in the study of complex molecular networks in systems biology. In omics research particularly, C. elegans is favored for its standardized experimental advantages (such as fixed cell number, short life cycle, simple culture conditions, etc.). Therefore, compared with most other complex organisms, C. elegans is much less likely to introduce undesirable variations in experiments, making it a preferred choice for multi-omics research.
