C. elegans - related genetic experiments

C. elegans-related genetic experiments, such as backcross, cross, balancer cross and SNP mapping are frequently adopted in the scientific research when using C. elegans as a research model. 

1) By backcrossing the mutant with wild-type N2 or original background strain, unrelated background mutation can be erased.

2) We could easily generate a compound (double) mutant by performing cross between different mutants. We have successfully generated mutants with 10 alleles which are on five different chromosomes.

3) The lethal allele or sterile allele can be stably maintained through the balancer cross experiment to generate the balanced heterozygotes.

4) SNP mapping is a classic forward genetic approach that uses molecular markers to localize mutations to specific chromosomal intervals. It is a genetic technique that employs genome-wide SNPs as genetic markers and determines the precise position of the target gene on the chromosome by linkage analysis between the SNPs and the phenotypic traits. SNP mapping can localize a mutation to a region of approximately one cosmid (~30 kb).
